Chinese New Year Traditions, Animals & Legend
Having just entered the Chinese New Year – Year of the Tiger – Daniel shared details of this widely celebrated Chinese event. He stated the new year is a time for big family gatherings, similar to Christmas in the U.S. The children particularly enjoy the family gathering because all the relatives give children red envelopes that contain money. In China children are taught to respect money and prosperity.
The traditional family gathering involves having a pot of water cooking in the center of the room. Family members add various ingredients on and share in preparing the festive meal.
The 12-year cycle starts from Rat, followed by Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Ram, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.
According to Chinese legend, the twelve animals quarreled one day as to who was cheap MLB jerseys to head the cycle of years. The gods were asked to decide and they held a contest: whoever reached the opposite bank of the river would be first, and the rest of the animals would receive their years according to their finish.
The twelve animals gathered at the river bank and jumped in. Unknown to the ox, the rat had jumped upon his back. As the ox was about to jump ashore, the rat jumped off the ox’s back and won the race. The pig, who was very lazy, ended up last. That is why the rat is the first year of the animal cycle, the ox second, and the pig last.
Daniel stated in this year of Tiger – 2010 – people born in the year of the Horse and year of the Dog will have good luck. That was good news for me (Dog). Daniel was born in the year of the Goat (Ram), and his brother, Dan, in the year of the Dragon. There Though he didn’t specify when his year of good fortune will be, it is obvious the Lin brothers have found prosperity and happiness in Rockwall, Texas.
